Our Work Across World Regions
Middle East/North Africa
Cure Violence has adapted its model to treat violence in the Middle East using credible messengers who interrupt violence, but adapting the model to work in a different environment. Cure Violence has previously worked on reducing violence in Iraq and currently working on supporting a peaceful Syria through trainings. A re-integration program is currently operating in Morocco.
Many cities across the United States have recognized the added value of the Cure Violence Model and are implementing the program to augment the efforts of law enforcement, social service, and other agencies.
Cure Violence has participated in a number of site visits, conferences, and learning exchanges across the region and has implemented an adapted version of the model in Loiza, Puerto Rico; San Pedro Sula, Honduras; Juarez, Mexico; Port of Spain, Trinidad; San Salvador, El Salvador. New sites are starting soon in Colombia, Brazil, Jamaica, and Mexico.
Local partner Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) began implementation in the Hanover Park community in Cape Town in January 2013. To date, the staff has mediated 350 conflicts and have 109 high risk clients. An independent evaluation found a 53% reduction in shootings and a 31% reduction in killings.
